Blank World Map (Robinson Projection) by ElizaWyatt Blank World Map (Robinson Projection) by ElizaWyatt
The Robinson-projection blank world map.

I like to make realistic fantasy maps in my free time. So, here's a world map without the world, earth based and free for everyone.

A few map-making tips:
  • The tropic lines tend to be desert. Ironic, isn't it?

  • Tropical rain forests tend to be found on the equator. 60 N/S can get pretty wet, too.

  • The arctic and antarctic circles are where you'll get 24-hour days around the hemisphere's mid-summer

  • Earth's axial tilt is at about 23.5 -- if you change this, the tropic and the arctic circles change, as well as the seasons and how water disperses (since a lot of water flow in the summer is snowmelt)

  • The hottest and the coldest places on a planet will be on the interior of the continents. Oceans act as a giant heat sink.

  • Mountains tend to have a wet side and a dry side, depending on prevalent winds. Ever hear about how it's always raining in Seattle? Blame the cascades; Eastern Washington is two steps away from being a desert.

  • This is a great (free) world building reference: A Magical Society Guide To Mapping

Terms of use:
  • If you use it, link back here so other map-makers can grab it too.

  • I'd like to see your maps, because I'm a bit of a cartography junky, so give me a link in the comments if you feel like it.

  • Post your maps wherever, on DA or off. I'm easy-going.

Have fun world building!

This template was a major help and awesome in general.

I've used it to give structure to the map I'm working on for the fantasy novel series.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
I have been needing something like this to act as a guide for my drawing so I can get the continent's dimensions right.
When I finish the map I will send you a Note!

And as someone who lives in Seattle, I loved and laughed at your comment regarding wet/dry sides of mountains.

Coincidentally, I also happen to live in Seattle. :) I felt our reputation needed to be useful for a bit.

Now to explain to everyone that no, there is no snow here...

LOL or that our "rain" isn't always a real rain, but a constant drizzle. Or that just a ferry ride away, we have a rain forest.

We do kinda get snubbed by the rest the country. You have to say Washington state, because otherwise people assume you mean DC. National channels cram us so far over when displaying maps, we might as well not exist. Or explain that most those movies and tv shows that take here have a lot wrong. Ever watched Sleepless in Seattle, the scene where Meg Ryan follow Tom Hanks and his son from Lake Union to Alki, in winter.....drives me nuts. Nothing about that scene makes sense. ^^;

Oh, but every movie that's set in a 'real city' does everything wrong. Seattle's certainly not left out there.

I hope you enjoy it! Robinson isn't perfect, but the template really helped put my latest project in perspective.

Aye, when I get chance I'm gonna take a good look at it. I first started drawing one of my worlds out on a polyhedral map which was a little bizarre when I realised how the world would fit together as a sphere.

Now I tend to just stick with flat maps. So it would be interesting to have a crack at something slightly different.
